YouthFindAVoice (YFAV)

YouthFindAVoice (YFAV), set up by Leicestershire Chorale, is a unique opportunity for young musicians to encourage choral singing in Leicestershire schools.

YFAV, 2 October 2010The most recent YFAV event took place on 2 October 2010 at St James the Greater in Leicester. Thirty-five young singers and more experienced visitors joined Leicestershire Chorale in a workshop to explore contemporary choral music performing Cloudburst and Sleep by the American composer Eric Whitacre, Immortal Bach by Knut Nystedt (performed in the round), A Drop in the Ocean by the rising star of Baltic choral music Eriks Esenvalds, and the haunting Lord's Prayer by the Finnish composer Jaakko Mäntyjärvi.

Eugene Dillon-Hooper, a sixth-form student from Beauchamp College and Choral Scholar with Leicestershire Chorale, writes: "The workshop was a great experience for all those involved. The music we sang was inspirational and innovative, as we were not only using our voices but hands to create this magnificent music. We learnt and performed music by different composers, each with their own, modern style. The music we sang forced us to push our own boundaries, with the whole choir scattered in groups around the church, using clapping and clicking while singing.

My experience was fantastic. The whole concept of the day was excellently planned, and the way everyone picked up the music so swiftly was unbelievable. And the performance went so well."

YFAV, 28 February 2010The previous YFAV project culminated in a performance on 28 February 2010 at the De Montfort Hall. Joining Leicestershire Chorale were pupils from Beauchamp College, Countesthorpe Community College, Groby Community College, Humphrey Perkins High School, Leicester Grammar School, Leicester High School, Quorn Rawlins Community College and St Martin's Catholic High School. In the first half, the singers performed a variety of pieces (pop, jazz, musical, classical) as individual choirs; in the second half, they joined forces to sing Poulenc's amazing Gloria, accompanied by the Bardi orchestra and internationally renowned soprano Rita Cullis.
