SUMMARY:Fire and Water: Choral Music of the Elements
DESCRIPTION:Thomas Weelkes epic madrigal Oft did I marle sets the tone for this sequence of words and music with its line ‘But fire and water there may mell\, where love and hate together dwell’. This programme of opposing moods and texts will include music by Morten Lauridsen (from his Madrigali – Fire Madrigals)\, Tomas Luis de Victoria (Vidi speciosam)\, Gabriel Faure (Cantique de Jean Racine)\, Herbert Howells (Like as the hart) and many others. SUMMARY:Bach Johannes Passion
DESCRIPTION:J.S. Bach’s setting of the Passion according to St John has become one of the most widely performed musical settings of the Passion text in the history of modern Christendom. A brutally direct and gripping work; yet with a refined beauty and heart-rending emotion; it is perhaps the most approachable of the composer’s large-scale oratorios. \nTo have the opportunity to hear a performance in the original language\, at original pitch with period instruments and a historically informed approach\, is a rare occurrence outside of the major UK musical centres. We will be joined by a team of exciting young soloists\, some with connections to Leicester and the Chorale. \nDetails\nSaturday 5 April 2014\, 7.30pm • Leicester Cathedral
