SUMMARY:Joyous Jubilee Summer Concert and Black Tie Buffet Supper
DESCRIPTION:Dear supporters\, \n In past years\, pre-pandemic\, so many of you have been generous benefactors towards our efforts as a choir to keep presenting interesting musical programmes\, work with exciting professional ensembles and soloists and offer opportunities to young singers in order to develop the next generation of choral musicians.\nAfter a break of two years\, Leicestershire Chorale asks again that you may feel so generously inclined to support all of this work\, given that regular concert audiences are decreasing in number and grant applications ever harder to come by.  We could ask for this money in the form of a Crowdfunder\, or even by way of a general plea for individual donations to a specific project\, but instead we invite you a wonderful evening of choral music and solo song  on Saturday 11 June to celebrate Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee followed by a delicious buffet supper of British classic dishes and some tasty wine. Please see your personal invitation at the top of this email for details\, and please RSVP as soon as possible to tickets@leicestershirechorale.org.uk. If you respond with a yes\, you will be sent further information and a booking form.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nYour incredibly kind donation\, beyond covering our catering and concert costs\, will help us to put on an exciting programme of events next season\, including a likely opportunity to: \n\nCome and sing with us in October\nSerenade you with songs of love in recognition of St Valentine in February\nPerform Francis Poulenc’s striking but devilishly hard Lenten Motets in March\nSing of the evocative colours of the night and associated flowers in July\nPerform with world-leading period instrument ensemble the English Cornett and Sackbut Ensemble on Saturday 10th December at St Andrew’s Church on Jarrom Street!\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHere’s a link to a video of us on our Youtube site so you can judge for yourselves if we’re worth sponsoring! https://youtu.be/gNLFfH6Lz40

SUMMARY:Vespers (Op. 37 from All night vigil) Rachmaninov
DESCRIPTION:After twice postponing our original plans to perform this choral tour de force from the great Russian master composer Serge Rachmaninov\, we sincerely hope to be able to bring this wonderful music to you this April. \nFull of rich\, sonorous harmony\, searing and soaring melody\, rhythmic drive and thrilling climax\, the Vespers is one of the all-time classics of the a cappella choral repertoire. Sung in the original church Slavonic language and with additional guest profundo basses to add the required depth of vocal texture\, our organist David Cowen will also display his mastery of improvisation as an occasional interlude to our vocal tapestry. Set in the sacred surroundings of St Andrew’s\, Jarrom Street\, this programme will hopefully captivate and offer appropriate reflection for the season. \nThe work was composed and premiered in 1915\, at a time when the world was in turmoil with more to come shortly after\, in terms of the denouement of the first world war and a devastating influenza pandemic. We find ourselves performing this work a little over a hundred years later when the world seems to be on the threshold of yet more war and strife. All art is political to some extent or other\, and we have thought long and hard about whether we should perform Russian repertoire. We have decided to go ahead- this performance is a call for peace\, dedicated to the Ukrainian people and all those in Russia who are opposed to the invasion of Ukraine. \nTickets now available from: \nwww.ticketsource.co.uk/leicestershirechorale or tickets@leicestershirechorale.org.uk

SUMMARY:'Now the green blade riseth' A concert of choral\, vocal and organ music from Passiontide to Easter
DESCRIPTION:Despite the restrictions we have all been under\, Leicestershire Chorale have\, thanks to technology\, continue to have found ways of singing ‘together’ during this last lockdown period. We very much look forward to welcoming you as our guests in the not too distant future to some live performances\, be that remotely\, in person or in some combination of the two. \nFor now we have one more YouTube concert to bring you and the date for your diary is Tuesday 30 March at 7.30pm. For what we hope will be our last virtual concert\, we present a programme of choral music\, solo song\, organ music and poetry\, all recorded in individual singers homes and moulded together by technology wizards Gina Baker and Alan Hames\, to form a broadcast of about 45 minutes. \nThe concert will open with the whole choir singing the sumptuous and much loved 8 part motet Crucifixus by Antonio Lotti (1667-1740). \nThis will be followed by a variety of music and readings taking the viewer from the agony of the Passion in Holy Week\, to the joyous and hopeful Resurrection of Easter Day.  Featuring organist David Cowen\, our Countertenor and Musical Director Tom Williams\, and members of the choir in smaller ensembles\, we also hope too to release some previously unseen video recordings of music from previous live concerts\, including This have I done for my True Love by Gustav Holst (1874-1934). \nFinally\,  the whole choir will join to sing the joyful Surrexit Christus Hodie by Samuel Scheidt (1587-1654) the words of which strike a hopeful note both for Easter and for our lives post-pandemic. \nChrist is risen today Alleluia! \nFor the comfort of all people. Alleluia! \nRejoice in this Easter Day. Alleluia! \nLet us give thanks to God. Alleluia! \nThe concert is open to all and free to attend\, but donations to help defray our costs are always welcome. You can donate by going to our Support Us page on this website.

SUMMARY:In Illo Tempore
DESCRIPTION:Music by Monteverdi and the Franco-Flemish School\nWith David Cowen Organ \nWe begin our concerts of 2019 with a lesser-known but rather glorious Parody Mass by Monteverdi\, which draws its musical motivic inspiration from a six-part motet by the much earlier Franco-Flemish composer Nicolas Gombert. Whilst the mass ostensibly looks back to the stile antico (old style) of Palestrina\, and of course Gombert himself\, it is still imbued with a stylish touch that hints at music found in Monteverdi’s Vespers and other later works. \nWe pair the mass and its parody motet with other settings from the Franco-Flemish school by Josquin and Adrian Willaert\, whose texts all begin with the same opening words: In Illo Tempore ‘At that time’. \nTickets £12 from TicketSource. SUMMARY:This Have I Done For My True Love
DESCRIPTION:The choral music of Ralph Vaughan Williams features strongly in the latter half of our Anniversary Season and rightly so\, as it seems the perfect vehicle for a choir such as ours. Perhaps the most exacting piece of music the he wrote for voices\, the setting of the Mass Ordinaries in the key of G Minor will test our choral discipline to the limit but also offers a huge reward for paying careful attention to the delicate nuance of this most English of musical languages. \nWe add to the Vaughan Williams music by another English great\, Gustav Holst\, most famous for his Planets Suite. His gift for soaring melody and searing harmony wasn’t only restricted to his writing for instruments and is very much evident in both his a cappella and accompanied choral music. We are delighted to be returning to the fine acoustic of St James the Greater for such a well matched programme.

SUMMARY:Messiah
DESCRIPTION:Following what we hope to be the glorious success of our Verdi concert a month earlier\, we turn to another giant of the popular choral repertoire in Handel’s oratorio Messiah. Arguably the most celebrated piece of classical music within the historical canon\, Uppingham Parish Church has waited many years to hear Handel’s music again and we are delighted to be bringing such a celebrated work to a special venue for us as a choir. \nWe last performed Messiah with a full period instrument band and four invited professional soloists. On this occasion\, we present the work with single strings\, no oboes and with step-out solos delivered by choir members themselves. In many ways this shows how far Chorale has developed as a group\, now to be able to take on such a challenge with limited input from outside the organisation.

SUMMARY:Orlando Tenebrae
DESCRIPTION:The stunning and thought-provoking surroundings of Holy Cross Priory Church in the centre of Leicester’s New Walk provide an apposite setting for this programme of music for Lent and Passiontide. At the centre of our sequence is James Weeks startling work Orlando Tenebrae\, written between 2006 and 2010\, which highlights man’s capacity for inhumanity towards itself through the reading of four secular texts\, set alongside choral invocations of three Tenebrae Responsories. \nWe are delighted to be joined for this performance by the Very Rev’d David Montieth\, Dean of Leicester\, who will read these poems from Fire in the Soul – a collection which muses on a theme of human rights that was published by New Internationalist – amongst our Weeksian choral interjections. \nWe preface this original and unique work with other settings of the Tenebrae by Orlando di Lasso and more generalised music for Passiontide by Thomas Tallis and John Sanders.

DESCRIPTION:Chorale makes its second visit to St Aidan’s bringing a reflective and devotional programme of choral and organ music\, plainsong chant and soothing words\, all inspired by the ancient monastic office of compline.
