SUMMARY:This Have I Done For My True Love
DESCRIPTION:The choral music of Ralph Vaughan Williams features strongly in the latter half of our Anniversary Season and rightly so\, as it seems the perfect vehicle for a choir such as ours. Perhaps the most exacting piece of music the he wrote for voices\, the setting of the Mass Ordinaries in the key of G Minor will test our choral discipline to the limit but also offers a huge reward for paying careful attention to the delicate nuance of this most English of musical languages. \nWe add to the Vaughan Williams music by another English great\, Gustav Holst\, most famous for his Planets Suite. His gift for soaring melody and searing harmony wasn’t only restricted to his writing for instruments and is very much evident in both his a cappella and accompanied choral music. We are delighted to be returning to the fine acoustic of St James the Greater for such a well matched programme.

SUMMARY:Messiah
DESCRIPTION:Following what we hope to be the glorious success of our Verdi concert a month earlier\, we turn to another giant of the popular choral repertoire in Handel’s oratorio Messiah. Arguably the most celebrated piece of classical music within the historical canon\, Uppingham Parish Church has waited many years to hear Handel’s music again and we are delighted to be bringing such a celebrated work to a special venue for us as a choir. \nWe last performed Messiah with a full period instrument band and four invited professional soloists. On this occasion\, we present the work with single strings\, no oboes and with step-out solos delivered by choir members themselves. In many ways this shows how far Chorale has developed as a group\, now to be able to take on such a challenge with limited input from outside the organisation.

SUMMARY:A Tale of Two Swans
DESCRIPTION:Our Lady’s Convent School has recently become the fourth in the Loughborough Endowed Schools Foundation\, and this has delivered another opportunity for a renewal of the strong relationship between Leicestershire Chorale and the LES Music School. \nWe co-present a programme of English and Italian madrigals\, given in the resonant acoustic of OLCS Chapel\, including music by Monteverdi\, Gibbons\, Gesualdo\, Tomkins and many others. There is a wealth of repertoire here\, perfect for both chamber choir and small vocal ensemble alike and with all the emotional ingredients one could wish for to create a vibrant and arresting programme. We very much look forward to this collaboration and to presenting our efforts to you all in performance.

SUMMARY:Orlando Tenebrae
DESCRIPTION:The stunning and thought-provoking surroundings of Holy Cross Priory Church in the centre of Leicester’s New Walk provide an apposite setting for this programme of music for Lent and Passiontide. At the centre of our sequence is James Weeks startling work Orlando Tenebrae\, written between 2006 and 2010\, which highlights man’s capacity for inhumanity towards itself through the reading of four secular texts\, set alongside choral invocations of three Tenebrae Responsories. \nWe are delighted to be joined for this performance by the Very Rev’d David Montieth\, Dean of Leicester\, who will read these poems from Fire in the Soul – a collection which muses on a theme of human rights that was published by New Internationalist – amongst our Weeksian choral interjections. \nWe preface this original and unique work with other settings of the Tenebrae by Orlando di Lasso and more generalised music for Passiontide by Thomas Tallis and John Sanders.

SUMMARY:Te Lucis Ante Terminum
DESCRIPTION:Chorale makes its second visit to St Aidan’s bringing a reflective and devotional programme of choral and organ music\, plainsong chant and soothing words\, all inspired by the ancient monastic office of compline. This is a rich seam of music to mine\, which is often overlooked in favour of that written for more important religious festivals. \nTonight’s sequence promises another opportunity for rest and reflection\, amidst a busy and demanding world.

SUMMARY:The Dream of Gerontius - Edward Elgar
DESCRIPTION:The Dream of Gerontius\, Op. 38\, is a work for voices and orchestra in two parts composed by Edward Elgar in 1900\, to text from the poem by John Henry Newman. It relates the journey of a pious man’s soul from his deathbed to his judgment before God and settling into Purgatory. Elgar disapproved of the use of the term “oratorio” for the work\, though his wishes are not always followed. The piece is widely regarded as Elgar’s finest choral work\, and some consider it his masterpiece.

SUMMARY:Vespers of the Blessed Virgin by Johann Rosenmüller
DESCRIPTION:Rosenmüller was born in Oelsnitz\, near Plauen. He studied at the University of Leipzig\, graduating in 1640. He served as organist of the Nikolaikirche Leipzig from 1651\, and had been assured of advancement to cantor. He became director of music in absentia to the Altenburg court in 1654. However\, in 1655 he was imprisoned in a scandal involving alleged homosexual activities. \nEscaping from prison\, he fled to Italy\, and by 1658 was employed at Saint Mark’s in Venice. He composed many vocal works while teaching at an orphanage for girls\, (Ospedale della Pietà) between 1678 and 1682. The works of Giovanni Legrenzi and Arcangelo Corelli were among his Italian influences and his sacred compositions show the influence of Heinrich Schütz. \nIn his last years\, Rosenmüller returned to Germany with Duke Anton-Ulrich of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel\, at whose court he served as choir master. He died in Wolfenbüttel on 10 September 1684\, and is buried there. \nWe are delighted to be joined by the The English Cornett & Sackbut Ensemble\, a virtuoso period instrument ensemble with a host of distinguished recordings to its name.
